It is a tranquil, moonless evening out at sea,
three days after the full moon. The tides are at minimum ebb and flow, the water is at a mid-spring balmy 26oC. Beneath your boat, perhaps as yet unbeknownst to you, the biggest orgy and most dynamic orgasm on the planet is blossoming into full swing. Will you join in? Corals can reproduce asexually, but also do so sexually, typically altogether on one night of the year along the entire 2,000km of the Great Barrier Reef. When, and only when, the above mentioned conditions are just right, the corals release immeasurable masses of both eggs and sperm. What follows is an intense and colorful orgiastic reproductive explosion which floats to the surface of the sea and intermingles in the greatest genetic mishmash known to man. After the local marine creatures have bloated themselves gorging on this free-floating flotsam of fertile food, those eggs which have somehow managed to both be found by the correct sperm and remain uneaten, gradually find their way back to the ocean depths. Of these, those lucky enough to end up in a congenial environment begin the struggle to grow, from larval stage, to the adult masterpieces we all admire and wonder at. Many tours run specifically to witness this special event each year. Diving is the best way to experience coral spawning. Book early!
