A vital aspect of every fun-packed holiday is knowing how to easily acquire your favorite cocktail ingredients and fave brand of ciggies.
Thankfully 'grog' is in plentiful supply in north Queensland and can be purchased in hotels, licensed supermarkets and bottle shops. Most pubs are open from 10am - 12pm every day (they may close earlier on Sundays) and booze can be taken away during those trading hours. Independent bottle shops open at 10am and usually close at 9pm but this can vary depending on the shop. Bars and Night Clubs are generally licensed to serve alcoholic bevies until 1am or 3am. Depending on the venue (either a bar, pub or club) a beer will set you back between AU$2.00 and $5.00 and a cocktail between AU$5.00 and $10.00. A six-pack of beer costs AU$12 on average and a carton (24 cans or stubbies) will set you back around AU$32. A decent bottle of Aussie wine costs between AU$10 and $16. A drinkable bottle of spirits starts at about AU$30. A good selection of Aussie wines is available duty free at Cairns airport. The legal drinking age in Australia is 18. It is illegal to drink in the street, but the police are fairly tolerant about intoxication unless you are being totally over-the-top, aggressive or violent. Cigarettes can be purchased in pubs, clubs, supermarkets, convenience stores, petrol stations and newsagents. A packet costs about AU$8.00, depending on the brand and a pack of roll-your-own tobacco is priced at AU$16.00. Many restaurants and bars sell cigars. Remember, smoking pot is illegal in Queensland.
