If diving the depths is not your thing, there are plenty of coach-style Barrier reef day tours to choose from, where you don't even have to get your feet wet if you'd prefer not to. The emphasis with this type of tour is on comfort rather than adventure.
There is a wide selection of tour operators to choose from, most of which have tours departing daily either from the Marina Mirage in Port Douglas or Cairns wharf. Most trips are aboard huge, luxury air-conditioned catamarans and they usually include smorgasbord lunch, morning and afternoon tea, a presentation by a marine biologist, underwater observatory and coral viewing via semi-submersible vessels or glass bottom boats. Snorkelling equipment and instruction is supplied.
Passengers needing transfers are picked up from their accommodation by air-conditioned coach and this is included in the total cost of the package.
Destinations vary from outer reefs such as Agincourt and Arlington reefs to Green Island or Fitzroy Island. Some of the more established companies have their own viewing platforms moored at various reef sites.
Bear in mind, this style of reef tour is for those who want a lazy, relaxing day rather than a ride on the wild side.
