While diving and snorkelling are the major attention-grabbers on the Great Barrier Reef, there are heaps of other water-based activities to get amongst.
Sea-kayaking is an exciting option for the reasonably fit. Day and extended trips are available from Mission Beach out to Dunk Island and Hinchinbrook Island. A 2 day/one night sea -kayaking trip operates from the Daintree out to Snapper Island. Dunk Island is something of a gold mine for those heavily into water-sports. On Dunk, you can do everything from water-skiing and tube-riding to jet-skiing and aqua aerobics, with lots of qualified, friendly staff on hand.
Sailboards and Windsurfers are available for hire at a large number of beaches and island resorts.
Parasailing is available in Cairns and Port Douglas. A good way to sample a variety of adrenalin-pumping action is to book a 'Watersports Package' which contains parasailing, a jet bike ride and Bumpa Tube ride.
Jet-boating is available out of Cairns and those who like their thrills under the surface should try a swim with an underwater torpedo. These operate out of Port Douglas.
For holiday-makers who prefer more gentle pursuits there are several luxury charter yachts which operate gourmet lunch and dinner cruises out to the reef, departing from both Cairns and Port Douglas.
On the many inland lakes and dams, you can windsurf or hire a houseboat for a few days of fun.
On the raging rivers, get into some temperature-raising white-water rafting.
For those keen on throwing a line in, the range of fishing activity is humungous and stretches from big game charter boats to hiring a humble 'tinnie.' Get hooked on our section on 'Fishing' for more info.
