Sightseeing tours usually take the form of rather large, air conditioned coaches with similarly large numbers of passengers, though some tour companies run smaller, 4WD vehicles with smaller numbers of passengers.
The itineraries for day trips is usually pretty full, departing at around 7am and returning at 7pm, depending on the destination. Day tours out of Cairns and Port Douglas head to popular spots such as Kuranda, Mossman Gorge, Copperlode dam, Atherton Tableland, Cooktown, the Daintree, Cape Tribulation or Dunk Island and Mission Beach.
Two and three day tours go to the Undara Lava Tubes and Savannahland, Cape Tribulation, Bloomfield Falls, Cooktown and Cape York. Most tours include meals, morning and afternoon tea.
The drivers/guides are mostly charming locals with substantial knowledge of the area who are keen to ensure their guests make the most of their tour. Pick-ups from accommodation places in Cairns and the northern beaches are complimentary.
