Remember that Highwaymen song, 'The road goes on forever'? It could have been written about bus travel in Queensland. Bus travel is fun, inexpensive and a top way to meet fellow travellers.

Buses in one form or another, are probably the most utilised means of transport in Far North Queensland. Everything from shuttle buses and chauffered coaches to mini vans are available for visitors.


Two companies - McCafferty's and Greyhound Pioneer - provide regular interstate coaches to Cairns.

McCafferty's operate five coaches per day from Brisbane to Cairns, connecting with regular services from Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide,Darwin and Alice Springs. There is no bus service from Perth, the alternative is the Indian-Pacific train. Student, child, pensioner and health care card discounts apply to all sectors. The Cairns terminal is located at Trinity Wharf Centre, Wharf Street, Cairns.

McCafferty's has a 'Follow the Sun' package which enables the passenger to take unlimited stops along their journey, provided there is no backtracking. YHA members and students can also take advantage of McCafferty's 'Australian Roamer Pass' which allows passengers to save up to 50% off standard fares and is valid for one year. With the Roamer Pass, passengers can change direction, change travel plans and make unlimited stopovers.

All McCafferty's coaches are air conditioned and are equipped with restrooms, chilled water, music and video systems. Smoking and alcohol are not permitted.

Greyhound Pioneer operates regular services in and out of Cairns from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin and Tennant Creek.

Greyhound also runs a daily service from Cairns to Cape Tribulation and Cooktown. The fare from Cairns to Cape Tribulation is $28 one way and $54 return; the Cairns- Cooktown fare is $95 one way and $182 return. Discounts are available for students.

A host of different, flexible passes are available from Greyhound, some of which include free tours. They include the Aussie Explorer Pass and the Aussie Kilometre Pass which is distance measured to allow travel anywhere within the Greyhound Pioneer network, travelling in any direction with unlimited stops. This pass starts at 2,000 kms.

The Greyhound terminal in Cairns is at Trinity Wharf, Wharf Street. Their 5-Star coaches feature panoramic windows, restroom facilities, chilled drinking water and video/audio facilities.

Greyhound also runs daily services between Cairns and Mission Beach and Townsville to Mission Beach (return).

Several bus companies operate deluxe shuttle services between Cairns, the airport, the northern beaches and Port Douglas. These inclulde Airport Shuttle, Express Chauffered Coaches, Far North Connections and Sun Palm Express.

The majority of these services operate on a bookings-only basis, usually with a two-person minimum and will pick up from all resorts, hotels and hostels in the area.

They range in price from $22 - $25 one way. The picturesque road trip from Port Douglas to Cairns takes approximately one hour. Children are half price and some offer a family rate.

Coral Coaches has the largest network of buses in the region, operating frequent daily services between Cairns, Port Douglas, Mission Beach and Mossman. They also operate a daily service from Cairns to Cape Tribulation (return), a twice-weekly service from Cairns to Cooktown (via coast road), as well as a thrice-weekly service from Cairns to Cooktown (via the inland road). The inland road route which stops at Kuranda, Mareeba, Mt Molloy, Mt Carbine and Palmer River, is a couple of hours quicker than the coast road route.

Coral Coaches also operates a reliable half-hourly shuttle service around the Port Douglas area. Regular stops include the Marina Mirage, Macrossan Street (town centre), the Radisson resorts and the Rainforest Habitat.

The Marlin Coast Sunbus is the public transport system of the Cairns region and provides regular daily services from Gordonvale in the south to Palm Cove in the north.

Limousines are another option for tourists wanting a more comfortable and private transfer to Cairns, the airport, Kuranda and Mission Beach (and vice versa). Vehicles include BMW 7 series, Ford LTDs, Fairlanes and stretch limos. Prices generally start from $115 per car (Port Douglas - airport), bookings are essential and it is a door-to-door service.
